Conference on “eradicating and preventing statelessness” was held
Conference on “eradicating and preventing statelessness” was held at “JW Marriott Absheron” hotel on April 28. Deputy chief of the State Migration Service Parviz Musayev, Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) Elmira Suleymanova, UNHCR representative in the Republic of Azerbaijan Dag Sigurdson made speech at the conference. Statelessness, eradication andprevention of these cases were main subjects of the discussion at the conference.
It was noted that, as a result of measures taken by the State Migration Service in the direction of documenting stateless persons, 852 stateless persons were adopted to the citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan with relevant orders of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan during 2008-2014. Along with it, during this period citizenship of 18254 persons as a citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan was established and they were providedby relevant state agencieswith documents approving the citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
State Migration Service is taking serious measures in the sphere of struggling against statelessness in the Republic of Azerbaijanin compliance with requirements of international conventions which our country is party to. It can be noted that, from this point of view, during investigation ofreceived applications necessary steps have been taken in the direction of defining legal status of majority of persons residing in the territory of Azerbaijan Republic for a long time without documents confirming their citizenship, as well as in the direction of reducing statelessness. So, as a result of cooperation of 8 regional departments of the Service with local executive bodies related to finding and documenting persons from this category residing in various regions of Azerbaijan Republic, 759 illegally residing persons have been revealed in the territory of Azerbaijan Republic excluding Baku and Absheron during the first quarter of 2015.
The conference summed up its work after demonstration of presentations on different subjects.
