Chief of the State Migration Service met with the new Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration in Georgia

On January 28, 2025, Vusal Huseynov, Chief of the State Migration Service, II rank state migration service counselor, has met with Lars Johan Lönnback, the newly appointed Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Georgia and Country Office with Coordinating Functions (COCFs) in the region, as well as Troy Dooley, the Head of the IOM Representation in Azerbaijan.

Warmly welcoming the guests, Vusal Huseynov congratulated Mr. Lönnback on his appointment and wished him success in his activities. The Chief of the Service provided information on migration management in Azerbaijan, spoke about the global initiatives in which our country actively participates in the field of migration, and expressed satisfaction with the fruitful and close cooperation established over many years between the State Migration Service and the IOM, one of its main international partners in this field. He highly appreciated the organization's contributions through various projects and initiatives to the orderly, legal and safe management of migration, the provision of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable migrants, and capacity-building in this field.

The Chief of the Service recalled the participation of the Director-General and Deputy Director-General of the IOM in the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), which Azerbaijan hosted in the region for the first time in November last year, and emphasized the importance of including migration-related issues into the climate agenda within the framework of the conference.

Expressing gratitude for the cordial meeting, the Head of the IOM Representative Office in Georgia, Lars Johan Lönnback, conveyed his congratulations on the high-level organization of the COP29 event in our country, noted that he would spare no effort to develop relations during his tenure, and expressed confidence that the implementation of joint projects in the field of migration in the future would contribute to the expansion of cooperation.

Discussions were also held at the meeting on other issues of mutual interest.
