Meeting held with the head of UNHCR’s Office in our country Furio De Angelis at State Migration Service

At the meeting with the head of UN High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) Office in our country Furio De Angelis which was held in the atmosphere of mutual opinion exchange Chief of the State Migration Service (SMS), II rank state migration service counselor Firudin Nabiyev talked about development of close cooperation ties between the Service and UNHCR Representation in Azerbaijan and significance of successful implementation of a number of projects. 

Service chief touched upon achievements gained within the framework of UNHCR’s campaign “To end statelessness in 10 years” that the Republic of Azerbaijan acceded to, as well as stated that active participation of Azerbaijani delegation in high level summit of the UN General Assembly on “Addressing large movements of refugees and migrants” in Geneva, including round table on “International action and cooperation on refugees and migrants and issues related to displacement: the way ahead” are the indicators of developing and effective cooperation between the entities.

F.Nabiyev brought into attention the rapid development of Azerbaijan over the last years under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, achievements gained in international arena, targeted works done towards solving the problems of refugees and IDPs in our country vis-à-vis European attitude to migrants. He mentioned that as a result of occupation of more than 20 percent of its territories by Armenia during the first years of independence, Azerbaijan coped with problems of more than 1 million refugees and IDPs almost alone.

Noting the importance of migration issue from the point of national security of each state Service chief added that today foreigners and stateless persons who come to the republic for seeking asylum or obtaining refugee status are surrounded with care and attention, as well as relevant measures are taken for protecting their rights and freedoms. This fact is the indicator that Azerbaijan which is in the state of war sensitively approaches to the protection of the rights of not only its own citizens, but also foreigners and is able to ensure this.

Furio De Angelis highly appreciated the works done by Azerbaijani state regarding foreigners and stateless persons, who come to the country for seeking asylum or obtaining refugee status, emphasized the importance of joint works with State Migration Service towards protection of their rights and expressed his assurance on successful continuation of mutual cooperation in the future, as well.
