Chief of the State Migration Service attends 107th Session of the Council of International Organization for Migration

 

The delegation headed by the Chief of the State Migration Service, II rank state migration service counselor Firudin Nabiyev is on a visit in the Swiss Confederation at the invitation of the Director General of  International Organization for Migration (IOM)  Mr. William Lacy Swing for the purpose of attending the 107th Session of IOM Council.  

According to the agenda the organizational matters were reviewed at the opening of the session which took place at the Palais des Nations in Geneva from 5 to 8 December. After the election of the chair, deputy chairs and speakers the candidacy of the Kingdom of Tonga which applied for the membership to the organization was voted and the Kingdom was unanimously elected as the 166th member of the Organization. Later on the participation of some international, as well as non-governmental organizations in IOM Session in the capacity of observer was approved by voting.

Director General of IOM William Lacy Swing delivered comprehensive report at the Session. Giving detailed information about the establishment and activity of the organization the Director General stated that the 107th session of IOM Council is dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the establishment of IOM. He mentioned that IOM passed through different phases of development.   

Later on W.L.Swing brought to the attention of the session participants statistics reflecting current situation of migration processes in the world.

President of the UN General Assembly Peter Thomson emphasized importance of the Agreement on closer relationship between the UN and IOM signed in the framework of high-level Summit of UN General Assembly on “Addressing large movements of refugees and migrants” in New-York, in September of this year. He appreciated this cooperation as reflection of importance given to migration issues by the world countries.

Furthermore, high level panels on “Global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration”, “Opportunities for policy development to address climate migration and cross-border disaster displacement” and “The Grand Bargain on humanitarian financing” covering different aspects of global migration processes are planned to be held within the session.

The Session will wrap up on December 8.
