Meeting with the Head of UNHCR Office in our country at State Migration Service

 

Chief of State Migration Service, II rank state migration service counselor Firudin Nabiyev met Furio De Angelis, Representative of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in our country.

Firudin Nabiyev talked about his recent meeting with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi in Geneva.

It was mentioned that active participation of Azerbaijani delegation at 67th session of UNHCR Executive Committee at the invitation of UN High Commissioner for Refugees was highly appreciated by the High Commissioner.

Service Chief expressed that State Migration Service is interested in application of international practice in refugee status determination procedures.

Furthermore, exchange of opinion was conducted on measures taken within the framework of UNHCR campaign “To end statelessness in 10 years” that the Republic of Azerbaijan has acceded to in order to increase awareness in the sphere of fight against statelessness and to resolve problems arising in the process of determination of legal status of such persons, as well as to strengthen cooperation for efficient protection of their rights. It was stated that State Migration Service is carrying out serious activities in line with the requirements of international conventions that the Republic of Azerbaijan is a party to in the field of fight against statelessness.

Furio De Angelis proposed cooperation with other UN Institutions for preparation of methodology aimed to get precise figures on the number of stateless persons. The initiative on participation of UNHCR representatives in “Open Door day” events held by State Migration Service was met with interest.

Development of legislative base on asylum issues, in particular measures taken towards application of subsidiary protection was discussed at the meeting.

Later exchange of opinion was conducted on issues of mutual interest.
