Meeting at State Migration Service
Chief of State Migration Service II rank migration service counselor Mr. Firudin Nabiyev met with Regional Director for South-Eastern Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia of International Organization for Migration Ms. Argentina Szabados on July 30.
Greeting the guest Service chief expressed his satisfaction with the level of existing cooperation with IOM, and noted visit of Director General of the organization William Lacy Swing to our country in September of last year as an obvious example of this. Firudin Nabiyev recalled positive thoughts on migration management in Azerbaijan recalled by Director General during his meeting with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the framework of his visit with satisfaction. He stressed that this visit created opportunity for further expansion of cooperation between the two institutions.
Service chief emphasizing complexity of migration processes currently occurring in the world noted that rapidly increasing number of persons forcibly leaving their home countries as a result of conflicts causes concerns. He stressed that Azerbaijan is not unfamiliar to these processes and brought to attention that more than 1 million of our compatriots were expelled from their homelands as a result of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Firudin Nabiyev noting the importance of support to the states by IOM during conflicts, highly appreciated projects implemented by the organization in the direction of preventing such situations and specially mentioned “Consolidation of Migration and Border Management Capacities in Azerbaijan” Project by IOM. He noted that State Migration Service continuously improves its activity towards protection of both foreigners staying in our country and our citizens living abroad or returning to our country as an entity monitoring migration processes. İn this regard, significance of Pilot Project on Assistance for the Voluntary Return which is planned to be jointly implemented with International Organization for Migration in this direction was noted and belief in signing cooperation agreement on its implementation in the nearest future was expressed.
The guest thanking to Firudin Nabiyev for broad information and his high appreciation for IOM’s activity brought to attention her productive visit, meetings with a number of government officials, visit to Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in order to participate at the even dedicated to World Day against Trafficking in Persons.
