Meeting held at State Migration Service with the Head of UNHCR Office in Baku
On June 6 Firudin Nabiyev, Chief of State Migration Service, II rank state migration service counselor met with Dag Sigurdson, Head of UNHCR office in our country on the occasion of the end of diplomatic mission of the latter in our country.
Service Chief mentioned successful activity of Dag Sigurdson in our country, expressed satisfaction over the level of cooperation between State Migration Service and UNHCR Office in Azerbaijan and practical implementation of various significant projects, wished him success in his future activity.
At the meeting held in the atmosphere of mutual opinion exchange it was stated that the relations with UNHCR has been established on solid foundations and stepped on new phase of progress. Successful results of cooperation with UNHCR in the frame of “Asylum Systems Quality Initiative in Eastern Europe and South Caucasus” were emphasized as well. Giving detailed information on refugee status determination and protection of their rights Service Chief underlined that migration legislation and implementation mechanisms have been developed in our country.
Drawing attention to accession of the Republic of Azerbaijan to UNHCR campaign “To end statelessness in 10 years” taking into account importance of the citizenship right which is one of the fundamental human rights F.Nabiyev touched upon activities carried out by the Service across all the regions of the country for eradication of statelessness in our republic in a short period of time.
F.Nabiyev stated, “As a result of successful policy pursued by President Ilham Aliyev Azerbaijan has rapidly developed and become one of the prestigious countries of the world. Azerbaijani state has done tremendous work for resolution of problems of the refugees and IDPs in the country. 94 modern settlements and residential complex with social and technical infrastructure, including 89 in 12 years have been established in the cities and regions of the republic for the people from this category, 250 thousand IDPs have moved to new houses. All of these have been highly appreciated by UNHCR and shown as example for the countries facing similar problems”.
Dag Sigurdson highly appreciated steps taken by State Migration Service for improvement of national asylum system and eradication of statelessness. The guest mentioned that approach of State Migration Service, thus the approach of the Republic of Azerbaijan in relation to refugees can be example for other countries. He emphasized that he is leaving Azerbaijan with good impressions and expressed his assurance that the cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNHCR will further be successfully implemented.
At the meeting opinion exchange was carried out on number of issues of mutual interest.
