Azerbaijan co-chaired roundtable in the frame of the International Migration Review Forum
4 interactive multilateral roundtables dedicated to the 23 objectives of the Global Compact for Migration have been organized in order to review the experience on the implementation of the aforementioned Compact at all levels in the framework of the first International Migration Review Forum held in the UN Headquarters in New York on May 17-20, 2022. Each roundtable was co-chaired by representatives of 2 member states identified by the President of UN General Assembly, as well as key panelists were appointed to lead the interactive discussion at each roundtable. Azerbaijan is among 8 countries co-chairing the four roundtables organized in the framework of the Forum.
Along with the Chief of the State Migration Service Vusal Huseynov on behalf of our country, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations Omar Hilale co-chaired the 4th roundtable held on the second day of the Forum. The aforementioned roundtable was dedicated to the 1st (Statistical data), 3rd (Information provision), 7th (Reduction of vulnerability), 17th (Elimination of discrimination) and 23rd (International cooperation) objectives of the “Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration”. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs provided support to the organization of roundtable co-chaired by Azerbaijan.
Liu Zhenmin, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs made a speech as a keynote speaker at the 4th roundtable. At the same time Mr. Shahriar Alam Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic Bangladesh, Ms. Marcela Cerrutti Director of the Center for Population Studies, President of the National Human Rights Council of the Kingdom of Morocco Ms. Amina Bouayach, Asia Regional Manager of the Mixed Migration Center Mr. Themba Lewis, as well as Founder of the Women in Migration Network Ms. Catherine Tactaquin and Director of the New York Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Craig Mokhiber made a speech at the aforementioned roundtable. The panelists exchanged views on the objectives of the Global Compact for Migration, which was the focus of the roundtable, as well as answered questions of the participants.
At the end of the roundtables summary of the 4th roundtable was presented by Mr. Vusal Huseynov, Chief of the State Migration Service and the representative of the Kingdom of Morocco in the frame of the political debate led by Mr. Antonio Vitorino, Director General of the International Organization for Migration.
The Forum will continue its work with a plenary session led by the President of UN General Assembly.
