The Republic of Azerbaijan joined the "Champion Countries" initiative of the United Nations (UN) Migration Network
The Champion Countries Initiative aims to support, monitor and review the effective implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (Global Compact on Migration), the first and only intergovernmentally negotiated agreement with the application of whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach to international migration management, was established in September 2020 by UN, under the leadership of the Migration Network consisting of UN specialized institutions.
The Champion Countries Initiative provides an opportunity for participating countries to share their best practices and methods with each other and other UN Member States, as well as to support the promotion of the Global Compact on Migration at various levels, in order to contribute to achieving the targets of the Global Compact on Migration which is based on the Sustainable Development Goals. Azerbaijan is the first country in Southeast Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia to join the initiative at the invitation of the UN Migration Network.
It should be noted that the initiative, which currently includes 27 countries, is open to all countries and will last until the start of the first International Migration Review Forum in 2022.
The Forum to be held every 4 years will serve as a key intergovernmental global platform to discuss the achievements and challenges in the implementation of Global Compact on Migration.
