The UN Network on Migration is launched in the Republic of Azerbaijan

An online event was held with the participation of the chief of the State Migration Service, III rank state migration service counselor Vusal Huseynov on establishment of the UN Network on Migration in the Republic of Azerbaijan, which further strengthens cooperation among the Member States of the United Nations (UN).

The UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Ghulam Isaczai, Head of the Representation of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Azerbaijan Vladimir Gjorgjiev, Head of European Union Delegation in the Republic of Azerbaijan Kestutis Yankauskas, Ambassadors of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to our country, officials of the World Health Organization, International Labour Organization, UN agencies, IOM headquarters in Geneva and its Vienna office, as well as responsible employees of the relevant authorities of the Republic of Azerbaijan, NGOs, companies and other diplomatic representations of foreign states operating in our country attended the meeting.

In his opening speech chief of the State Migration Service Vusal Huseynov firstly honored the memory of the Azerbaijani military personnel and citizens who became martyrs as a result of provocative attacks by the Armenian armed forces on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border in recent days, with a minute of silence together with the event participants.

In his speech V.Huseynov highly appreciated close cooperation with the UN and UN Migration Agency – IOM and mentioned that launching of the UN Network on Migration in Azerbaijan will contribute to more successful implementation of the “Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration”, to which the Republic of Azerbaijan acceded.

He stated that establishment of effective dialogue between people, countries and communities has particular importance for Azerbaijan and accession to the Global Compact is an obvious indicator of that. The Service chief mentioned that there are numerous expectations from launching of the Network in our country and this platform will be favorable tool for acquiring new knowledge, skills, practices and other benefits, as well as for sharing information, data on migration and good practices of Azerbaijan with other states.

It was mentioned that today’s meeting has special importance at a time when the world needs more cooperation and solidarity in the fight against COVID-19. Vusal Huseynov gave information on main points of the activity of SMS during pandemic and highlighted that work in this direction is organized efficiently and promptly by various solutions. He noted that activity of the Network is quite important in the current difficult situation from the viewpoint of expanding cooperation in the field of international migration in all directions.

In their opening speeches the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Ghulam Isaczai, Head of IOM Representation in Azerbaijan Vladimir Gjorgjiev mentioned importance of the established Network for migration management and cooperation, as well as highlighted organization of flexible and efficient measures by SMS to resolve problems of migrants and refugees belonging to vulnerable groups of the population in Azerbaijan arose during the pandemic, as well as the support given to the calls of the international organizations holding aid campaigns.

The representative of the Headquarters of the Network on Migration in Geneva mentioned current efficient cooperation with Azerbaijan in the direction of implementation of the “Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration”, as well as thanked for contributions of the State Migration Service to the report of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on implementation of this document.

Later, detailed discussions on technical and other issues related to the establishment of the UN Network on Migration in Azerbaijan were conducted.

It should be noted that, the UN Migration Network was established to provide effective, coordinated and systematic support to the countries in implementing the “Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration”, adopted in May 2018. Azerbaijan was one of the first countries supporting this initiative of the UN Secretary-General.
