“Spelling Bee” project jointly organized by the State Migration Service and the “Migration Volunteer” Public Union

Migration volunteers have realized the popular word game “Spelling Bee” project which is held annually by world countries to promote English language.

The “Spelling Bee” project serves to the development of extra-curricular English-speaking activities, learning proper writing and pronunciation in this language and the promotion of academic English among youth. The competition requires acute intellect along with strong memory. The rules of the entertaining competition had been firstly prepared in the United States. The project not only promotes proper pronunciation but also enriches vocabulary. The game, starting from the secondary schools, at a later stage, is implemented in a wider format - at the national level. Each year, more than 11 million students in the USA compete to win the “Spelling Bee” game which has 90 years old tradition.

18 participants selected from 55 young people participated in the Spelling Bee competition jointly organized by the State Migration Service and the “Migration Volunteer” Public Union. Only 144 words out of 500 given to them in advance, were used. In the final stage, youngsters competed to properly pronounce new words.

The competition consisting of 7 stage was more successful for the top 3.

Taking into consideration that the “Spelling Bee” project held among the “Migration Volunteers” met with interest by youth and had a significant contribution to the enhancement of their language skills, a similar project is expected to be held in a broader format in the future.
