June 20, World Refugee Day

In accordance with the UN General Assembly Resolution adopted  in 2000, the World Refugee Day has been proclaimed since 2001 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. Events are held around the world every year on the occasion of this day.

Today an event will be held at the International Mugam Center jointly organized by the UNHCR Office in Azerbaijan, the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs and the State Migration Service dedicated to the World Refugee Day. Representatives of state bodies, including ministries, committees and other organizations, diplomatic missions accredited in our country, international and local humanitarian organizations, as well as representatives of refugees and IDPs communities are expected to attend the event.

The State Migration Service is one of the competent authorities on granting refugee status to foreigners and stateless persons,  reception, accomodation of persons of this category and other related matters  in our country.  At present, 75 foreigners who have been granted refugee status are registered at State Migration Service.

According to the UNHCR data, by the end of 2017, 68.5 million people were forcibly displaced from their home country.

As a result of the occupation of more than 20 percent of our lands by Armenia, Azerbaijan is still among the countries that faced the problem of refugees and IDPs starting from the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s of the last century. Over 1 million people live as a refugee and internally displaced person in our country.
