Citizenship issue is one of the basic human rights

The meeting was held in Youth House of Shirvan city on the topic "Citizenship issue is one of the basic human rights" by the State Migration Service. The purpose of the meeting is to organize the documentation of persons without documents and with unidentified citizenship living in the official territory of Shirvan Regional Migration Department.

Furio de Angelis, head of UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Azerbaijan, Maharram Mustafayev, deputy head of the Executive Power of Shirvan City, Ziya Aliyev, judge of Shirvan City Court, Elchin Mammadov, temporary executing the deputy chief of the Citizenship Issues Solution Department of the Citizenship Issues General Department of SMS, Shamsaddin Mammadov, deputy chief of Shirvan city Regional Migration Department, chiefs of registration and identity cards groups of Shirvan and Hajigabul district police departments, local executive power and public representatives attended at the meeting.

Realization of significant issues in the direction of awareness-raising in the fight against statelessness, as well as the requirements of international conventions, supported by our country was noted at the event. It was also noted that Azerbaijan has joined "End to statelessness within 10 years" of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the important measures are just implemented by SMS in the field of fight against statelessness of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The importance of existence of the problems appeared in the determination of the legal status of people living in the country without documents and with unidentified citizenship within fights against statelessness, as well as strengthening of effective protection of their rights was underlined. It was mentioned that, the regular measures are being undertaken in the direction of detection and documentation of such types of persons, settled in various regions of our country. Just in 2017, the citizenship of 31 thousand 690 persons has been investigated and 27 thousand 88 persons have been recognized as to the citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan. 573 persons were admitted to citizenship and citizenship of 10 persons has been restored last year.

During the event, the appeal of 14 people living in the official territory of Shirvan city Regional Migration Department was listened. The documents for establishment of citizenship of 4 persons were received, documents for submission of documents for admission to citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan of 4 persons were presented, facts of living in the Republic of Azerbaijan and absence of citizenship of any country and subsequent application for admission to citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan of 4 persons were affirmed, as well as 1 person was advised to apply to the embassy of the country where he was born and receive relevant documents. Documents of 1 foreigner with his children were received to admission to citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
